Mike died in Beverly Hills, CA on July 28, 1995 of cancer at the age of 44. He's buried at the Greenwood Union Cemetery in Rye. I found this memorial to him online with a picture of the stone.
"A memorial to Ed McMahon’s son Michael McMahon, who died of cancer in 1995 at age 44, sits on the south portion of St. Jude’s Ranch for Children with a view of Lake Mead. Michael volunteered at the home for abused and neglected children in Boulder City for a year, and Ed McMahon was a strong supporter of the facility."
I often tell the story about how Mike came to my defense when another boy taunted me in class when no teacher was present yet (they would call it bullying these days). He was repeatedly calling me "scum of the earth" I vividly remember Mike telling this boy to leave me alone or he would have to deal with him. I remember who this other boy was, but I won't name him here. I remember being grateful and a little bit smitten with Mike when he did that. When Mike died, I wrote to Mr. McMahon to tell him this story of the son he raised.
I met Mike when he first moved to Bronxville. He was in the grade above me at St. Joseph. In those young days, there was a lot of apprehension when we had to deal with the older guys on the playground or at the Scout Field, but Mike was never one to be worried about. He could run like the wind but he was even quicker to defend someone who was being intimidated. I have never forgotton how kind he was. Rest in Peace, Mike.
I had exactly one date with Mike in high school. The impression I had at the time ws that he was quiet, kind and sensitive. I don't remeber why we never had another date, but there were no hard feelings on either side. Thats why I was shocked to learn of his death in 1995. I was in a grocery store check out line when I saw the headlines on what of those Enquier (sp?) type newspapers that he had died of liver cancer at a young age. It was headlines because of his father... May he rest in peace.
I had a couple of dates with Mike during senior year, including going to the graduation party at the Westerfields. I think he and Jenny Bond had broken up temporarily and I believe he went to Jones Beach with her the next morning. (My memory isn't what it used to be so feel free to correct me!). I was flattered that a football player asked me out, but felt badly for Jenny not to go to graduation with Mike. His father gave the remarks at the ceremony, and my father gave the convocation the day before. Katie Ferris
